Among her things sits a stuffed unicorn—a treasured keepsake her Abuelo gave her when she won her very first competition at just six years old. She has cherished it ever since. Now, it sits beside his memorial service pamphlet. Her grandfather was her absolute anchor, her biggest cheerleader, and a steadfast father figure. Following his loss, the non-linear path of grief manifests as an agonizing co-morbidity: a silent, overwhelming battle with an eating disorder.

Standing in her underwear before the glass, she is caught in a moment of stark, painful self-judgment, entirely disconnected from the beauty and achievement that surrounds her.
